(…Project Empower initiative donates 50 business tools to boost entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods)
Leading communications infrastructure company, IHS Nigeria, has donated business-support equipment to persons with disabilities in the Karonmajiji community of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, as part of its commitment to promoting inclusive community development and sustainable livelihoods.
The donation, made under the company’s Project Empower initiative, was presented during a ceremony held in the community on Monday, July 27, 2026.
According to IHS Nigeria, the intervention followed a community needs assessment and was designed to support active traders by providing business tools instead of cash grants, enabling beneficiaries to expand their businesses, become more self-reliant and achieve long-term economic stability.
Speaking at the event, the Director of Sustainability at IHS Nigeria, Titilope Oguntuga, said the initiative demonstrates the company’s commitment to fostering inclusive development by equipping persons with disabilities with the tools and opportunities needed to build resilient livelihoods.
She disclosed that the company donated 50 pieces of business-support equipment, including sewing machines, freezers, generators and hairdressing kits, to selected beneficiaries through an asset-based empowerment model.
Oguntuga said the initiative is expected to create lasting economic value by promoting entrepreneurship, improving household incomes and contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
The Chief of the Karonmajiji Disabled Community, Alhaji Sulaiman Muhammed Katsina, represented by the Secretary of the Community, Alhaji Mohammed Dantani, commended IHS Nigeria for its sustained support for persons with disabilities through practical and sustainable interventions.
He described the initiative as a demonstration of genuine partnership with the community, noting that the donation would improve the livelihoods of beneficiaries, create new economic opportunities and positively impact their families.
The event was attended by traditional rulers, government representatives, leaders and members of the Karonmajiji Disabled Community Association, implementing partners, including the Field of Skills and Dreams Vocational Technical and Entrepreneurship (FSD VTE) Training Institute, and other community stakeholders.
Participants reaffirmed their commitment to promoting inclusion, economic empowerment and sustainable community development.
IHS Nigeria said Project Empower remains a key pillar of its corporate sustainability strategy, leveraging strategic partnerships to drive economic inclusion, strengthen community resilience and create lasting opportunities for underserved communities across Nigeria.
