The Ondo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has sanctioned a group of secondary school students following the circulation of a viral “sign-out” video that captured unruly celebrations after the completion of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The affected students are from Oyemekun Grammar School, Aquinas Secondary School, and CAC Grammar School. The video, which spread widely on social media platforms including TikTok and Facebook, showed graduating students tearing their uniforms, chanting inappropriate slogans, and engaging in acts the government described as indiscipline.
In response, the Ministry convened an emergency meeting at its headquarters in Akure with school administrators and education officials to address what it described as a serious breach of conduct.
Following the meeting, the Ministry announced a series of disciplinary measures. It said the official school testimonials and WASSCE results of the 17 students identified in the video would be withheld until further notice, while their names would be entered into a newly established “black book” for student misconduct in their respective schools.
The Ministry also directed all secondary school principals across the state to establish a “black book” to document cases of student misconduct. In addition, senior officials of the affected schools have been issued queries for allegedly failing to adequately supervise the students and allowing the celebrations to degenerate into disorder.
Students captured in the video who are not in their graduating class have been ordered to be expelled from their schools with immediate effect.
The Commissioner for Education urged parents to continually counsel their children against engaging in actions capable of jeopardising their future, stressing that the sanctions are intended to serve as a deterrent to other students across the state.
