The traditional ruler of Olayinka community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda, has reportedly died in captivity after being abducted by kidnappers who demanded ₦21 million, two brand-new motorcycles, and a jerrycan of petrol as ransom for his release.
The monarch’s death was confirmed through a voice message circulated by a member of a community committee involved in efforts to secure his freedom, bringing a tragic end to days of anxiety and negotiations.
According to the committee member, despite relentless efforts by family members, community leaders, religious clerics, and residents, the monarch did not survive the ordeal.
“This is to inform the Olayinka community, both young and old, that our beloved father, His Royal Highness Alhaji Salman Olatunji Aweda, the monarch of Olayinka, has answered the call of his Creator. The will of God has come to pass,” he said.
He noted that numerous attempts were made to secure the monarch’s release, including prayers and negotiations with the abductors, but all efforts proved unsuccessful.
“All the efforts made by family members, residents, committees, and Islamic clerics have now led to this moment. The will of God has happened,” he added.
The committee member urged residents to accept the development as an act of divine will and disclosed that arrangements had been concluded for Islamic funeral prayers in accordance with Islamic rites, despite the monarch’s body not yet being recovered.
“God has taken the monarch from the people of Olayinka. Please let us accept our fate. May God forgive his shortcomings,” he stated.
He further explained that Janazah prayers could still be conducted even in the absence of the deceased’s body.
Reports indicate that the kidnappers initially demanded ₦21 million, two motorcycles, and a jerrycan of petrol before negotiations were opened with community representatives. Although there were claims that efforts were made to meet the ransom demands, the monarch was allegedly killed while still in captivity.
The incident has plunged the Olayinka community into mourning, with residents expressing shock and grief over the loss of their traditional ruler after days of hoping for his safe return.
The tragic development has also renewed concerns over the growing menace of kidnapping and insecurity in parts of Kwara State and across the country.
