The Ogun State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral video and photographs circulating on social media alleging the arrest of suspected kidnappers in Kanuyi Community, Simawa, Ogun State, revealing that the individuals involved were serving police officers mistakenly identified as criminals.
According to the Command, the clarification became necessary following reports received by the Simawa Division on Sunday, June 1, 2026, at about 11:00 a.m., that two suspected criminals had been apprehended by residents of the community.
Police operatives were immediately deployed to the scene, where the two individuals were rescued from an agitated crowd and taken into protective custody for identification and investigation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the men were serving police officers attached to a Police Mobile Force Squadron in Lagos State. Further findings showed that the officers had inadvertently lost their way while returning from an official assignment in Sagamu and were subsequently mistaken for suspected kidnappers by members of the public.
The Command stated that the officers’ identities were verified through valid police identity cards, official deployment documents, uniforms and other service materials. Their parent formation also confirmed that they were bona fide members of the Nigeria Police Force carrying out lawful duties.
Investigators further discovered that before the arrival of police operatives, some residents had searched the officers, taken photographs and recorded videos of them, leading to the circulation of misleading content on social media.
Although the officers escaped physical harm, the Command expressed concern that they were subjected to unwarranted public suspicion and emotional distress despite their commitment to protecting lives and property.
While commending residents for their vigilance and willingness to support security efforts, the police urged members of the public to avoid mob action and allow security agencies to verify facts before drawing conclusions or disseminating information capable of endangering innocent persons.
The Command noted that the incident highlights the challenges and sacrifices security personnel face daily in the discharge of their duties. It also underscores the need for stronger cooperation between the public and law enforcement agencies to curb misinformation and protect innocent individuals from unjust public condemnation.
Reiterating its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Ogun State Police Command said it would continue to strengthen community policing, professionalism, accountability and public trust through prompt responses to security concerns.
Residents were encouraged to continue reporting suspicious activities while allowing law enforcement agencies to conduct necessary verification and investigations. The Command also advised the public to rely on verified information from official sources and refrain from sharing unconfirmed reports that could cause panic, damage reputations or undermine confidence in security operations.
