The Lagos State Government has announced the emergency closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge for urgent safety investigations and repair works.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, stating that the closure will take effect from Tuesday, May 12, 2026.
According to the commissioner, the affected section covers the stretch between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa outbound toward Lagos Island.
Osiyemi explained that the temporary closure became necessary to enable the government carry out critical safety assessments and repair works aimed at ensuring the structural integrity of the bridge and the safety of road users.
To minimise traffic disruption, the state government announced alternative routes for motorists during the repair period.
Motorists heading toward Ijora and Apapa from Lagos Island have been advised to use the Costain route through Eko Bridge inward Alaka and connect to Funsho Williams Avenue toward their destinations.
Similarly, commuters from Apongbon inward Ijora have been urged to divert through the Outer Marina corridor and link Iddo to continue their journeys.
The commissioner assured residents that traffic management officials and security personnel would be deployed across alternative routes to ensure smooth vehicular movement and reduce congestion.
“Adequate traffic and security personne
will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” he stated.
Osiyemi appealed to motorists to cooperate with traffic authorities and remain patient throughout the duration of the repairs, stressing that the intervention is necessary to safeguard lives and preserve the bridge infrastructure.
The Lagos State Government also urged residents to plan their movements ahead and consider alternative transportation options where possible to ease pressure on adjoining roads during the closure period.
