The National Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Dipo Olayoku, has described the resignation of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, from the party as a predictable development ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kwankwaso, a prominent political figure and former presidential candidate of the NNPP, is reported to have defected to the African Democratic Congress, a move that has stirred reactions across the political landscape.
Reacting to the development, Olayoku said the defection did not come as a surprise to the party’s leadership, citing long-standing ideological differences and strategic disagreements between Kwankwaso and key stakeholders within the NNPP.
According to him, the party had anticipated such a move, especially as political realignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 elections. He noted that while Kwankwaso’s exit may have short-term implications, the NNPP remains focused on strengthening its internal structures and expanding its national reach.
Olayoku further emphasized that the party is committed to its vision and would not be derailed by individual decisions, no matter how significant. He added that the NNPP leadership is already working on consolidating its base and preparing for future electoral contests.
Kwankwaso’s defection is expected to influence political calculations in the coming months, as parties position themselves and form alliances in anticipation of the next general elections.
