The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a final order stopping the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its 2025 National Convention
scheduled for Ibadan, Oyo State. The convention, set to hold between November 15 and 16, aimed to elect national officers for the PDP.
Justice Peter Odo Lifu barred the PDP from proceeding with the convention until it complies with its Constitution and Guidelines. The judge ruled that the PDP must allow Sule Lamido, a former Jigawa State Governor, to purchase a nomination form for the office of National Chairmanship and participate in the convention.
Reasons for the Court’s Decision:
-Non-compliance with party constitution: The PDP failed to comply with its own Constitution and Guidelines.
– Denial of opportunity: The party denied Lamido the opportunity to purchase a nomination form for the National Chairmanship position.
– Lack of publication: The timetable for the convention was not published for the attention of party members.
– Improper signing: Notices and correspondences were signed by the National Chairman without the National Secretary’s signature, violating the law.
– Insufficient notice: The PDP failed to issue the mandatory 21-day notice of meetings and congresses to enable INEC to monitor them
Other Court Rulings:
– Justice James Omotosho had earlier restrained INEC from recognizing the outcome of the convention due to the PDP’s failure to comply with relevant conditions and laws.
