By : Peace Udugba.The Lagos State Government has announced the commencement of the second phase of rehabilitation works on the Ogudu–Ifako Bridge in Kosofe Local Government Area.
This was disclosed in a statement released on Sunday by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), which stated that the repair works would begin on Tuesday, August 19, and continue until October 1, 2025.
According to the agency, a traffic diversion plan has been put in place to ensure uninterrupted movement of people and goods during the period of construction.
The statement further explained that the second phase involves a comprehensive restoration of the bridge’s expansion joints on the lane inbound Lagos Island, scheduled from Tuesday, 19th August 2025, to Wednesday, 1st October 2025.
To minimize the impact on vehicular movement, the Government has developed a detailed implementation plan supported by well-defined traffic diversion strategies aimed at reducing disruption and ensuring commuter convenience,” it read.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, noted that motorists approaching from the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway/Lagos Toll Gate axis toward Oshodi and Victoria Island will face a controlled diversion at the Ogudu–Ifako Bridge. He explained that traffic will be reduced to a single lane approximately 50 metres before the work zone, with normal flow resuming 50 metres past the construction site.
He further explained that motorists heading to Oshodi can utilize the Ojota Slip Road, which connects seamlessly to Ikorodu Road inbound Anthony, near the Taxi Park.
He added, “Motorists bound for Victoria Island may divert through the Ojota Slip Road, merge onto Ikorodu Road inbound Anthony (via Town Planning Way), then proceed through Gbagada to access the Third Mainland Bridge en route to Lagos Island. Alternatively, drivers may continue on Ikorodu Road toward Funsho Williams Avenue for direct access to Eko Bridge, providing another route to the Island.
Furthermore, the LASTMA bos advised motorists originating from Ikeja and adjoining precincts to traverse through Maryland, connect with Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue, and thereafter proceed via Eko Bridge to Outer Marina and adjoining corridors. Alternatively, they may link Ikorodu Road inbound Anthony (by Taxi Park) to Oshodi and pursue their onward destinations.
He added that LASTMA officers have been strategically deployed across the affected corridors to ensure vehicular fluidity, enforce lane discipline, and guarantee swift operational response to emergencies.
He passionately appealed for the unwavering cooperation of road users, stressing that scrupulous adherence to the traffic advisory and unreserved compliance with the directives of LASTMA personnel remain indispensable to the preservation of order during the rehabilitation exercise.
Motorists are profoundly enjoined to exercise patience, prudence, and civic obligation, as the partial closure of the bridge represents a vital component of the State’s overarching traffic management architecture designed to deliver enduring infrastructural dividends for the collective wellbeing of Lagosians,” Bakare-Oki noted.
Furthermore, the LASTMA boss advised motorists coming from Ikeja and nearby areas to use the Maryland route, connect to Ikorodu Road or Funsho Williams Avenue, and then proceed via Eko Bridge to Outer Marina and surrounding destinations. Alternatively, they can access Ikorodu Road inbound Anthony (by Taxi Park) to reach Oshodi and continue their journey.
He noted that LASTMA officers have been strategically deployed along the affected routes to maintain traffic flow, enforce lane discipline, and respond swiftly to any emergencies.
He also appealed for full cooperation from road users, emphasizing that strict adherence to the traffic advisory and compliance with LASTMA officers’ instructions are critical to maintaining order during the rehabilitation.
Motorists are strongly urged to be patient, cautious, and responsible. This partial closure is a necessary part of the state’s broader traffic management plan aimed at delivering long-term infrastructure benefits for all Lagosians,” Bakare-Oki stated.
