DSP Olorunpelumi Jacob, a senior officer with the Nigeria Correctional Service in Kogi State, and the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of Lokoja-based photojournalist Ayo Aiyepeku, has reportedly taken his own life.
The incident occurred in a private apartment in Lokoja, the state capital, days after the heinous crime was uncovered.
Olorunpelumi allegedly attacked Aiyepeku with a blunt object, rendering him unconscious, before dismembering his body and storing the remains in a deep freezer.
The murder reportedly took place last Tuesday night at an office complex near the Government House/GRA area of Lokoja, where the suspect operated a farm.
After the act, he was said to have transported parts of the body in his Hilux van. He returned hours later, unaware that a colleague of the victim—who had heard the distress cries—was still on the premises but unable to intervene.
It was gathered that the correctional officer had a farm in the compound of the office of ‘Inside Story online’ a newspaper where the victim worked as a Photojournalist.
The suspect had gone to the office by 7:30 pm where he called out his victim who he thought was the only one remaining in the office before killing him in cold blood.
Olorunpelumi was said to have called the photojournalist to assist him in putting a freezer in his vehicle when he hit him with a rod.
The Kogi Police Command on Wednesday said it had launched a manhunt for the suspected killer and urged members of the public who knew his whereabouts to alert the nearest police station.
However, at about 2pm on Thursday afternoon, the police, acting on a tip-off stormed into a lodge where the corpse of the suspect was recovered.
A bottle of a beverage and another poisonous substance was said to have also been seen at the scene of the incident.
Meanwhile, sources close to the police said investigation has continued to unravel the rationale behind the suicide.
